WHO IS TEOFILO?
Teofilo Garcia
Casque Maker
Born on March 27, 1941, Teofilo, an Abra local.
-
He was a student at Villa Mercedes Elementary School (formerly Barbarit Elementary School) until fourth grade.
-
His grandfather Hipolito taught him the art of Kattukong or Tabungaw hat making when he was only 15 years old.
-
He spent the majority of his life working as a farmer in order to send his five children to school. He also spent time planting "upo," the main ingredient in traditional Tabungaw.
-
He was awarded the “National Living Treasure Awardee” in 2012, Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan.
